The Storyteller statue“The inspiration for this piece comes from a poem by Pablo Neruda in which he writes, “No hablar es morir entre los seres” or “Not to speak is to die among human beings.”” The artist uses this theme of communication to relate that knowledge is useless unless it is passed on. Conversation is like a river in which information flows from one generation to the next. Whether by spoken or written word, knowledge and wisdom flow like a river by means of contact. By communicating with each other, communities are bound together through their stories, both personal and allegorical. The sculpture portrays the power of verbal communication and symbolizes the river of knowledge that connects us all, both young and old. It also reminds us to share our stories and wisdom with those around us.
