Art Exhibit Policy and Display Guidelines

Purpose

The Whittier Public Library seeks a mutually cooperative relationship with the art community, to foster its mission of “connecting people to knowledge, to ideas, and to one another.”

This collaborative relationship will complement and enhance the Library’s collection, resources, programming, and provide cultural opportunities to library patrons.

In pursuit of the stated purpose, the Library will work with art organizations and individuals, to liaise with artists interested in displaying and exhibiting their work in the Library’s designated exhibition space, and to select works which the Library finds to be consistent with its goals and missions for Whittier Public Library.

Description of Display Space and Exhibit Guidelines

All works will be displayed in the Community Room by the Library for such purpose.

Artists are responsible for submitting work with the appropriate hardware for secure wall hanging which includes a wire to be used with our walker display system.

Name and contact information for works of art can be included as part of the display.

Pricing may not be posted on the library display; however, Art title cards can be attached to the artwork. All purchasing of artwork must be conducted through the artist contact information provided, and not sold through library staff. Exhibitors may provide business cards or brochures for patrons to contact the owner directly.

The display period is for one month and can be installed the first day of the month and must be removed the last day of the month.

The Library is not responsible for loss or damage incurred while the exhibited items are in the library.

Artist Guidelines

Artists must complete and sign a written application form and release agreement prior to exhibiting their work in the library.

Artists must agree that work included in the display may be photographed due to other events taking place in the Community room.

Artists may not attach any hardware or other item(s) to the library walls.

Any publicity materials created by the artist to promote a display must be submitted to the Library Administration for approval before being released.

Disclaimers

Acceptance of any artwork for display does not imply endorsement of the artist’s viewpoints, beliefs, or artistic expression by the Whittier Public Library’s staff, governing board, or county administration.

All artwork accepted for display must meet existing local, state, and federal laws on obscenity, copyright, libel, defamation of character or invasion of privacy. Artwork will not be displayed that, in the opinion of the Library administration, is deemed to be patently offensive to the community as a whole.
